NWAEA Transition 101 for Parents

Expectation: NWAEA Strategist/other staff and PEC will assist in providing Transition 101 Workshop to parents and high school and middle school students on an IEP during the 2011-12 School Year.

What is Transition 101?
The workshop provides an overview of the transition process for students on IEPs. The three areas of transition planning—living, learning and working—will be discussed, in addition to the transition assessment process and tools. The team members involved in the transition process will be outlined, as well, so that parents and educators can serve as advocates for students in the transition process.
Steps to follow:

  • o PEC and Building Strategist will present Transition 101 for middle and high school parents (Strategist contacts Pam Megill to work out a date).

  • o Building Strategist will contact building administrator/SPED teachers to discuss promoting the workshop and planning a time/date (ex. during conferences, parent night). A combination of middle school and high school parents is the ideal. Location needs to be determined. Sign up/registration process will be determined.

  • o Promotional ideas: Save the Date, notice at IEP meetings, newsletters, email, school newspaper, poster, school website, handouts at conferences.

  • o The workshop will be 2 hours in length providing time to eat, present and discuss. A power point and handouts will be provided to Building Strategist prior to the workshop. A Q & A session will be part of the workshop.

  • o A meal will be provided to workshop participants. Building Strategist will organize the food. Discuss food planning with Pam.

  • o Participants will be asked to sign in and fill out an evaluation form.

  • o Building Strategist will be asked to fill out a reflection form to help us plan for future needs.
